It has ears and is carved with a turtle swimming on a green ground. The bottom of the base has been repaired. There is some glaze peeling and sticking to the rim of the mouth. There is some glaze peeling on the turtle part of the body.

 

Gennai yaki ware

This three-color pottery was produced in Gennai's hometown of Shido (now Sanuki City), Kagawa Prefecture, under the direction of Hiraga Gennai during the Edo period. As a naturalist, Gennai studied in Nagasaki and learned new glaze techniques brought from the Netherlands. He used this technique to promote the industry in his hometown of Shido, Sanuki, and taught the new sansai soft ceramic pottery.
