The "1970" written on the lower left indicates that the work was created in 1970 (at the age of 83). A similar work is shown in the catalog of "Bernard Leach: A Look at the British Masterpieces". When he first came to Japan, he had studied etching in England and taught etching.

 

Bernard LEACH

1887-1979

He was born in Hong Kong. He grew up in Kyoto and Hikone. After moving to UK, He studied at art school. He returned to Japan in 1909 where he encountered the Shirakaba-ha school. He went back to UK accompanied by Shoji Hamada in 1920. He built a kiln there and began to make pottery, establishing Leach Pottery in 1922. He was a pioneer of British studio pottery.
