The edge of a mountain can be seen in the distance and the moon is depicted above it. In the foreground is the Uji Bridge and a boat below it. The Tosa school established the Japanesestyle Yamato-e technique, and from the Muromachi period (1336-1573), the school was passed down from generation to generation at the imperial court. The school declined once during the Momoyama period (1573-1600), but was revived in the Edo period (1603-1868).

 

Mitsuzane TOSA  土佐 光孚

1780-1852

Son of Tosa Mitsusada. His childhood name was Torawakamaru. He served as a painter in the imperial palace and was promoted to the fourth rank in 1852. In 1818, he painted a screen of the Great Ceremonial Ceremony of the Daijo e (1818). He appeared in "Heian Jinbutsushi" from Bunka 10 to Kaei 5, and lived in Teramachi Marutamachi, Kyoto. His grave is in Chion-ji Temple (Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto).
