Tachi-hina is also known as paper dolls. The origin of Tachi-hina dates back to the time when dolls made of paper were floated down a river to drive away evil spirits. The hakama and kimono are decorated with turtle shell patterns and pine trees. Matsumura Keibun was a painter of the Shijo School in the late Edo period, He was a disciple of Goshun.
Keibun MATSUMURA
1779-1843
Painter of the Shijo school. Born in Kyoto. He was a half-brother of Goshun and studied painting under him. Although he was Goshun's older brother, they were about the same age as parent and child. He lived in Shijo and worked at Myohoin. He excelled in flower-and-bird paintings, and was said to have surpassed his elder brother in the beauty of his ink colors. He succeeded his elder brother and brought prosperity to the Shijo School.
