Toyo KANESHIGE

1896-1967

Born in Okayama Prefecture. He was the eldest son of the Kanashige family, one of the six famous Bizen ware families, and trained under his father, Baiyo, until around the age of 40, when he left the craftsmanship profession and switched to tea ceremony ware Bizen, modeled on Momoyama-era Bizen ware (Kobizen). In 1956, he was recognized as the holder of the Living National Treasure of Bizen ware.
