Gennai ware refers to a type of soft tri-colored ceramic that originated in Shido, Sanuki (present-day Sanuki City, Kagawa Prefecture), under the guidance of the Edo-period scholar and inventor Hiraga Gennai. During his studies in Nagasaki, Gennai was exposed to new glazing techniques brought by the Dutch. Upon returning to his hometown, he applied this knowledge to promote local industry and developed a distinct style of ceramic ware inspired by Chinese Tang sancai, but with a uniquely Japanese sensibility.
This particular piece features a pair of linked bowls adorned with a boat motif, vividly glazed in shades of green, amber, and cream. The interiors of the bowls are decorated with charming depictions of boats and foliage, offering a rustic and nostalgic charm. There are minor chips on the rims and one of the smaller bowls, as well as some kiln adhesion, but these imperfections speak to the age and character of the piece.
