The phrase "five winds and ten rains" means that the wind blows every five days and it rains every ten days, which is a sign of a good harvest. It is also used as a metaphor for a peaceful and safe world. The lower left corner reads "Ninety-five years old. During his long life of 97 years, from the Meiji era to the Showa era, Morikazu Kumagai was loved by many people and left many works including oil paintings, ink paintings, and calligraphy.

Starting out as a realistic painter, he eventually established a highly abstract figurative painting style with extremely simplified forms, surrounding outlines, and a flat composition, which is known as the “Kumagai style” in the world of Western-style paintings. He continued to exhibit his work at the Nika Exhibition and was called “the hermit of the painting world.
