Taika Inohara (1898–1991), a Japanese painter from Hiroshima, studied under Bakusen Tsuchida and Goun Nishimura. He was known for his serene depictions of flowers, birds, and natural landscapes, rendered in a restrained and delicate palette. His works reflect a quiet observation of nature and are celebrated for their refined simplicity.
This piece, titled White Plum Blossoms, beautifully exemplifies Inohara’s subtle style. The white blossoms are depicted with gentle brushwork and a soft color scheme, evoking a tranquil sense of early spring. The composition is modest in scale—approximately the size of a shikishi (decorative square paperboard)—making it easy to display in alcoves or small spaces. A graceful hanging scroll that quietly conveys the changing of the seasons.

Born in Fukayasu-gun (now Fukuyama City), Hiroshima Prefecture. His real name was Hisashi. He specialized in flowers, birds, plants, and trees. Known for his gentle painting style based on observation of nature and subdued colors, he was expected to lead the direction of modern flower-and-bird painting beyond realism, and developed a unique style in which decorative subjects were treated with a rough touch.
