Saneatsu MUSHANOKOJI – Framed Painting “Gardenia”

Frame:37.5cm × 45.5cm

This graceful painting by Saneatsu Mushanokōji features a white, double-flowered gardenia, delicately rendered with soft brushwork. The white blossom and green leaves stand in harmonious contrast against a warm golden background.

At the top, an inscription reads: "The joy of bringing the Tenkō flower to life." While “Tenkō” is not a specific variety name, it commonly refers to the double-flowered type of gardenia in this context.

The piece bears Mushanokōji’s signature and seal, and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by the Mushakai.

It is a serene and heartfelt work, embodying Mushanokōji’s refined aesthetic and deep appreciation for the beauty of nature.

Saneatsu Mushanokōji (武者小路 実篤)

1885 –1976

He was a Japanese novelist, playwright, poet, artist, and philosopher active during the late Taishō and Shōwa periods of Japan. Later on in life he requested that the pronunciation of his surname (as far as was concerned) be changed from the usual Mushanokōji, to Mushakōji, but without much success. He was nicknamed Musha and Futo-o by his colleagues.
