"Five winds and ten rains(五風十雨)" are written in ink on the fan. "Five winds and ten rains" means, as the characters suggest, that the wind blows every five days and rains every ten days, which is considered a sign of a good harvest, as the climate is mild and favorable. It is also used as a metaphor for a peaceful and safe world. This work was made when Morikazu was 95 years old. The lower left corner reads "96 years old" (counted years). It is accompanied by a certificate of registration from the Suiboku Tansai-ga Appraisal and Registration Society of Kumagai Morikazu. Morikazu began writing this kind of calligraphy after he passed the age of 90. This one must have been commissioned to be written on a fan. The previous owner removed the bone from the fan and framed it, so the bone is white.
Kumagai Morikazu graduated from the Western course of painting at Tokyo University of the Arts. It was his first time to be chosen by Japan Arts Exhibition on 1908, and the next year he was commended with his artwork "Candle". On 1916, Kumagai Morikazu officially became a member of Nika Art Exhibition. During the time from 1947 to 1951, he had been one of the initiate of Niki-Kai Exhibition. In his realism painting, there exists Expressionism. Kumagai Mori-ka painted the scenery, animals, and plants in daily life with minimalism style and bright colors. He also sketched the objects with lines, creating an unique composition. Alt-hough he was commended with Order of Culture, he de-clined it humbly. Kumagai Morika has been a domi-nating figure in Japanese painting world and also has lots of followers. After he passed away, there established Kumagai Morikazu Memorial Art Mu-seum in Gifu Pre-fecture and also Morikazu Kumagai Museum in Tokyo, Japan.
