The works of Goro Suzuki are cherished for their unique expression of personal sensibility and playful spirit. This Oribe bowl, crafted with Oribe glaze, features a beautiful greenish hue and a tactile texture that embodies the warmth of the clay. The flowing glaze and the way it is applied show Goro Suzuki’s distinct personality in his craft.

Inside the bowl, the phrase "MY WORK" appears along with a unique illustration of a character. Moreover, the words "I must create something" are inscribed, which reflect Suzuki's strong commitment to his creative process, showcasing his deep passion and dedication to his art.

The bowl also bears the date "1986", providing a sense of the historical context in which it was created. These elements come together to create a piece that vividly expresses Goro Suzuki's artistic world.

This piece also has a metal hook attached to the back, allowing it to be hung on the wall, making it an excellent choice for display as well as for use. It adds a touch of elegance and warmth to any setting, whether as part of your home decor or as a functional item.

This work was included in the catalog of the 2015 "Goro Suzuki: Living with Clay, Playing with Clay" exhibition at the Menard Art Museum, one of the many works that showcase Suzuki's unique approach to ceramics.

Goro SUZUKI

b. 1941

Born in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, Goro Suzuki is a leading Japanese ceramist who has built a unique style based on Momoyama-period pottery (Oribe, Shino, Kiseki) while refusing to be bound by tradition. He developed an original technique called "Goribe," a term he coined by combining his name "Go" (五), the name of tea master Sen no Rikyū's "ri" (利), and Oribe Furuta's "be" (部). This technique allows him to create unified works that combine different styles. His experiences in the United States deepened his sense of artistic pottery, leading him to challenge himself with large-scale pieces such as jars, chairs, and monumental platters.
