This vibrant and imaginative octagonal incense burner was created by modern ceramic artist Dohei Tsuboshima.
The sides are adorned with striking phoenix motifs rendered in red overglaze enamel (akae) and highlighted with gold accents.
The lid features a whimsical sculpted knob depicting a figure playing a musical instrument, blending playfulness with refined craftsmanship.

Dohei Tsuboshima was a disciple of Handeishi Kawakita, a prominent businessman and ceramic artist who was active from the Meiji to Showa periods.
Tsuboshima worked at the Hironaga Kiln in Tsu City, Mie Prefecture, and is known for his wide-ranging style.
In addition to polychrome and blue-and-white porcelain, his work spans various traditional techniques such as Shino, Oribe, and Korean Karatsu, showcasing his exceptional versatility.

1929 - 2013
Born in Osaka, studied under Kawakita Hanroko in 1946, and succeeded to Hironaga Toen after Kawakita Hanroko's death in 1963. Held a solo exhibition at Takashimaya Department Store in Osaka, and later held solo exhibitions at Takashimaya Department Store in Nihonbashi, Tokyo.
