China, Ming Dynasty (17th century)

D21.5cm H3.3cm

The central medallion features a bird amid foliage, surrounded by a lobed framework inspired by the shape of the hibiscus flower—an arrangement characteristic of the Fuyō-de style. Each surrounding panel is decorated with a variety of motifs, including fruits and floral designs, creating a richly varied and rhythmic composition.

The cobalt blue shows a wide range of tonal variation, with softly blurred brushstrokes that convey the spontaneity and rustic charm typical of Ko-sometsuke ware. The porcelain body is relatively thin, and subtle irregularities in shape and pooling of glaze reflect the character of Jingdezhen folk kilns of the period.
