This is an exceptionally gorgeous and dignified small lacquer cabinet (Ko-Tansu) featuring a magnificent display of Maki-e craftsmanship.
The entire exterior is lavishly adorned with Maki-e (sprinkled lacquer). The top panel depicts beautifully blooming cherry blossoms (Sakura) and powerful pine trees (Matsu) nestled against a majestic mountain-and-water landscape. The side panels showcase a dynamically cascading waterfall framed by vivid autumn maple leaves, alongside other seasonal flora such as autumn herbs and spring wild plants (horsetails and ferns). These rich transitions of Japan's four seasons are rendered with three-dimensional depth using raised Takamaki-e and meticulous Kirikane (cut gold/silver leaf) techniques. The ornately crafted, silver-toned metal fittings further tighten and elevate the overall presence of the piece.
Opening the front door reveals a hidden world of further surprises. The reverse side of the door features an elegant painting, while the three internal drawers are decorated with distinct geometric auspicious patterns, such as Shippo (interlocking circles) and Sayagata (swastika fretwork), executed in extremely fine Maki-e. This luxurious interior design ensures that a highly sophisticated aesthetic unfolds the very moment the cabinet is opened.
Please note that this piece exhibits a tight or slightly stiff fit when opening and closing the front door.
Whether acquired for appreciation or as part of a fine collection, this supreme lacquer masterpiece brings an overwhelming sense of traditional Japanese beauty and brilliant elegance to any space.
