Edo Period
D34.5cm H5.5cm
An extraordinary, large-scale platter of Gennai ware, a distinctive late-Edo period ceramics style originating from Shido in Sanuki Province (present-day Kagawa Prefecture) under the guidance and influence of the polymath Hiraga Gennai.
Crafted using precise mold-impressing techniques, the central medallion reveals a richly detailed, three-dimensional Sansui landscape featuring distant mountains, rivers, and pavilions. The surrounding wide rim is meticulously decorated with intricate arabesques, geometric bands, and auspicious motifs that evoke an exotic, international sensibility.
The vibrant green, yellow, and aubergine-brown lead glazes are skillfully applied to create a vivid Sancai (three-color) effect. Measuring an impressive 34.5 cm in diameter, this masterwork combines Edo-period technical ingenuity with striking visual power, making it a highly desirable piece for display and collection.
