An exquisite gold maki-e incense box (kogo) meticulously crafted in the shape of a traditional rigid fan (uchiwa), a classic symbol of Japanese summer, combining charming form with high prestige.
The top of the lid features wave patterns and intricate designs rendered in precise, three-dimensional detail using techniques such as taka maki-e (raised lacquer). Accents of mother-of-pearl (raden) emit a graceful iridescence as they catch the light. Even the underside of the lid is thoughtfully decorated with tomoe (whirl) motifs in mother-of-pearl, demonstrating meticulous attention to hidden details.
From the interior to the base, the surface is lavishly coated in a dense nashiji (pear-skin gold flake) finish. Despite its compact size, this masterwork condenses the fine artistry and playful spirit of the lacquer artisan into an extraordinary piece.
