Youson IKEDA (池田 遥邨)

1895 (Meiji 28) – 1988 (Showa 63)

Originally trained in Western painting under Matsubara Saburosuke, he was selected for the Bunten exhibition. In the early Taisho era, he shifted to Japanese-style painting and studied under Takeuchi Seihō. His works Snow in Osaka (1928) and Crow Castle (1930) were awarded special prizes at the Teiten exhibition.

 

From 1936, he taught at his alma mater, Kyoto City School of Painting (now Kyoto City University of Arts). In 1953, he founded the Seitosha art group. He became a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1976 and received the Order of Culture in 1987. Born in Okayama Prefecture, his real name was Shōichi.
