Qingbai Ware (Blue-White Porcelain) / 青白磁

A type of porcelain made by applying a slightly bluish transparent glaze—caused by trace amounts of iron—over a white porcelain body and firing it in a reduction atmosphere. This ware originated in the early Northern Song dynasty at the Jingdezhen kilns in China and remained popular until around the Yuan dynasty. Because the glaze pools in carved or incised designs, creating soft blue shadows, it is also known as yingqing (“shadow blue”) ware.
