Goshun / 呉春
(1752 [Hōreki 2] – 1811 [Bunka 8])
Goshun was a painter and haiku poet active during the mid to late Edo period. He was the son of Matsumura Atsunori, an official in charge of the gold mint in Kyoto. Goshun studied painting under Ōnishi Suigetsu and Yosa Buson. Later, he interacted with Maruyama Ōkyo and developed his own distinctive painting style.
He lived in the Higashinotōin area of Shijō in Kyoto, and the school of painting that formed around him came to be known as the Shijō school. His art name was Goshun, and his haiku pen name was Gekkei.
