Shinobu KAWASE / 川瀬 忍

Shinobu Kawase (1950–) is a Japanese ceramic artist born in Ōiso, Kanagawa Prefecture. The eldest son of Takeharu Kawase II, he was raised in a family with three generations of ceramic tradition. At the age of 18, in 1968, he began making ceramics under the guidance of his grandfather, Takeharu Kawase I, and his father, Takeharu Kawase II.

Drawing inspiration from and studying masterpieces of historical ceramics, Kawase has pursued his own distinctive approach to form and glaze, with a particular focus on celadon. He held his first solo exhibition in 1976 and received the Japan Ceramic Society Award in 1981. He continues to present his work primarily through solo exhibitions and is regarded as one of the leading contemporary Japanese ceramic artists working in celadon.
