Gorō SUZUZKI / 鈴木 五郎

Goro Suzuki (1941–) is a Japanese ceramic artist born in Toyota, Aichi Prefecture. Drawing on the traditions of Momoyama-period ceramics, particularly Oribe, Shino, and Ki-Seto ware, he has pursued free forms and vibrant colors that go beyond traditional conventions.

During his study trip to the United States in 1969–70, he held a solo exhibition in Los Angeles and gained experience that broadened his approach to contemporary ceramics. He developed his own distinctive technique, known as “Goribe,” combining different traditional methods. He also created new interpretations of Oribe, including “Los Oribe.”

In addition to tea wares and functional vessels, Suzuki has explored large-scale works such as chairs, large jars, oversized plates, and sculptural objects, expanding the possibilities of contemporary ceramics. He received the Japan Ceramic Society Award in 2001.
