Shigetoshi Nakazato (1930–2015) was a Japanese ceramic artist born in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture. He was the third son of Tarōemon Nakazato XII (Mun’ an), a designated Living National Treasure, and the younger brother of Tarōemon Nakazato XIII (Hoan). Born into a distinguished family of Karatsu potters, he devoted himself to studying the techniques and tea wares of Old Karatsu ceramics.
Drawing on his highly refined wheel-throwing skills, Nakazato pursued a distinctive style of Karatsu ware characterized by sophisticated forms and masterful firing. In 1952, he was accepted for the first time into the Nitten exhibition, and in 1965 he received the Special Award and Hokuto Prize for his work Sangen Tsubo. In 1973, he established his own kiln, Sangen-gama, and developed a contemporary approach to the traditions of Old Karatsu. He became recognized as one of the leading ceramic artists of Karatsu ware and continued his practice until his death in 2015.
