This Kizeto vase is modeled after a single-layered bamboo vase. Kato Kozo, through his encounter with Arakawa Toyozo and others, studied Momoyama period pottery and sublimated it into his works.
Kozo Kato
1935 -
Ceramic artist of the late Showa-Heisei period. Born in Mizuha City, Gifu Prefecture on March 12, 1935. Entered Gifu Prefectural Ceramics Laboratory in 1951. Studied under Koubei Kato V. Won his first prize at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition in 1937. In 1937, he was selected for the first time for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, and in 1966 became a regular member of the Japan Crafts Association. In 1943, he won the Asahi Shimbun Award at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition for his "Iron Glazed Vase". In 1945, he established his own anagama kiln in Tajimi City. Studied under Toyozo Arakawa in the same year. In 1990, he became the president of the Mino Ceramic Art Association, and in 2021, he won the Gold Prize of the Ceramic Society of Japan. In the same year, he received the Pola Prize for Excellence in Traditional Culture for the production and transmission of Setoguro, Shino, and Kizeto ceramics. In 2022, he was awarded the Living National Treasure for Setoguro.
