On the front of the lid, a scene of a boat passing among pine trees is maki-e. On the back of the lid, there are Makie lacquer-work of Gamakoe, Camellia and Hagi (bush clover). It contains a brush, an inkwell, a small knife, and a cone. Each of these brush tools is also maki-e decorated with flowers and grasses. A drop of water with arabesque design is also included. When the inkstone is removed, the name "Yukio" is written in maki-e lacquer.
Yukio Yukio was a maki-e lacquer-work artist who left Kanazawa for Tokyo and was active from the Meiji period to the Showa period.
