This is an excellent piece depicting mountain cherry blossoms in full bloom. There are stains throughout. Soykyu Yamamoto studied under Yamamoto Shunkyo and Domoto Insho, and was a leading figure in the Kyoto art world, known for his flower-and-bird paintings that added a modern style to the traditions of the Shijo School.

 

Sokyu YAMAMOTO

1893 - 1993

Japanese-style painter. Born in Kochi Prefecture. Graduated from Kyoto City Specialist School of Painting. Joined Shunkyo Yamamoto's Sanae-kai and later joined Impression Domoto's Tokyusha. After the war, he was active in the Nitten, Tokaisha, Kyoten, Kansai Exhibition, etc., and was known for his flower-and-bird paintings that added a modern style to the tradition of the Shijo School. He is a counselor of Nitten and advisor of Tokyusha. He is also a member of the Kyoto City Cultural Merit Award and the Kyoto Prefectural Merit Award for Arts and Crafts. Received the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette. Received the Art Academy Prize and the Kyoto Prefecture Cultural Prize for Special Achievement. Lived in Kyoto. Died in 1993 at the age of 99.
