NAGOSHI Yagoro ”Iron Choshi (sake bottle opener)”
The Edo Nagoshi family was a family of kettle makers established in Edo by Iemasa, the second son of Yoshimasa, the 11th generation of the Nagoshi family, who was summoned to Edo by the Tokugawa Shogunate. The Edo Nagoshi family was known as Yagoro from generation to generation, and continued as the shogunate's official potter until around the Meiji period (1868-1912).
The iron sake bottle used here was made by Yagoro Nagoshi during the Kyoho period (1716 - 1736). How many generations are unknown. The box was written in 1953 by Onishi Jochu, the 14th generation of a family of kamaishi in Kyoto.
Edo Nagoshi Family
The children of the 11th generation, Yoshimasa Nagoshi, split the family in Kyoto (Sansho Nagoshi) and Edo (Iemasa Nagoshi), and Iemasa (birth date unknown - 1629) served as an official foundry master for the Edo shogunate. Yagoro" was the common name of the family for generations.
