This dish has the character for "flower" written on the prospectivesurface in underglaze blue. A circle is drawn around the characterfor "flower" using red and gold painting. A similar piece is shown in "Kenkichi Tomimoto's Ceramic Patterns. Kenkichi Tomimoto was awarded the Living National Treasure and the Order of Cultural Merit. He was a close friend of Bernard Leach and taught as a professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and Kyoto Municipal College of Art, where he taught Yoshimichi Fujimoto, Yuzo Kondo, Koichi Tamura, Shoji Kamoda, and others.
Kenkichi TOMIMOTO
1886 - 1963
Born in Nara Prefecture. After graduating from the Department of Design at the Tokyo School of Art and Design, he was impressed by the crafts in England, and upon returning to Japan, he began making pottery after meeting the ceramic artist Bernard Leach. He built a kiln in Nara, and later moved to Tokyo to build a kiln. In his later years, he moved to Kyoto. He continued to pursue his own unique patterns and forms throughout his life.
