The artist, Hattori Shunsho, is a lacquer artist from Kyoto. This is a decorative box named "Sho(fly)". On the front of the lid, three flying cranes of the title are maki-e (Maki-e). The sides are inlaid with mother-of-pearl inlay. The inside is lacquered in black.
Shunsho HATTORI
1943 - 2018
Born in Kyoto in 1943. Studied under Kiyoshi Uehara, a lacquer painter, and Shogo Ura, a lacquer artist. He traveled to Europe, the U.S., China, and Korea to hone his skills while winning numerous awards at craft exhibitions. From 1970 to 1978, he was a member of the Forme, a group of young lacquer artists in Kyoto. In 1963, he was selected for the Nitten Exhibition for the first time. Since then, he has exhibited at the Nitten and other exhibitions, winning many prestigious awards. In 1995, he received in audience Pope John Paul II and presented a calligraphy stand to him. In 2004, he created the shelves for the guest room of the Kyoto State Guest House. Currently, he is a trustee of Nitten. Executive Director of NIKKOKAI. Member of Kyoto Craft Artists Association. Member of Kyoto Lacquer Artists Association. Until around the 1980s, he mainly produced two-dimensional works using panels and other materials, but later shifted his focus to the production of decorative shelves and boxes. His works utilizing mother-of-pearl inlays (raden), which can be said to be a representative feature of Hattori Shunsho's work, also became the center of his production around this time.
