The scraping-off technique is a decorative method in which black clay is applied to the bare surface, a portion is scraped off, and a pattern is painted on the surface. The words "Kacho Fugetsu" (Flowers, Birds, Winds, and Moon) are written on it. The Nakazato family has been the official potter of the Karatsu Domain in Hizen Province for generations, and Tarouemon is the name passed down from generation to generation by the head of the family.

The grandfather of the 14th generation Nakazato Tarouemon was Nakazato Muan, a Living National Treasure who revived the old Karatsu of the Momoyama period. The father of the 14th Nakazato Tarouemon is Nakazato Houan, a member of the Japan Art Academy, who is said to have shown a new direction for Karatsu with his modern decoration. In 2002, he assumed the name of 14th generation Nakazato Tarouemon.
