A fan with various patterns of flowers, cranes, papier-mâché, and dragons are maki-e. Some of the patterns are inlaid with blue shells in raden (mother-of-pearl inlay), while others are in taka-makie and kirigane (cut gold) techniques, making this a very intricate work. The inside of the lid is covered with Nashiji. On the back of the lid, there is a red sign of Sokuchusai. Sokuchusai (1901 - 1979) was the 12th Iemoto(tea master) of Omotesenke, the tea ceremony school. There is an inscription of Ippyosai inside the high stand. The artist, Ippyosai, was a maki-e (gold-relief lacquerware) artist and a lacquer painter. The family had lived in Osaka for several generations, but moved to Kyoto when he became the fifth generation, and the family has been in existence for generations.
