【SOLD】Bernard LEACH ”Iron-painted plate with willow design”

It depicts a bird swimming under a willow tree. There is a BL inscription inside the base and a Leach Pottery mark on the side of the base. There is no original box, but a plain matching box. On the back of the dish, from the base to the sides, there is crack that were created during firing in the kiln.

 

 

Bernard LEACH

1887-1979

He was born in Hong Kong. He grew up in Kyoto and Hikone. After moving to UK, He studied at art school. He returned to Japan in 1909 where he encountered the Shirakaba-ha school. He went back to UK accompanied by Shoji Hamada in 1920. He built a kiln there and began to make pottery, establishing Leach Pottery in 1922. He was a pioneer of British studio pottery.
