Gracefully soaring cranes under the morning sun—

This exquisite set of 10 lacquer bowls, titled "Hinode Tsuru" (Rising Sun and Crane), is the work of renowned Japanese lacquer artist Okada Hyokan.

The lids are adorned with a stunning makie (gold lacquer) depiction of a crane, a traditional symbol of longevity and good fortune in Japanese culture. Inside the bowl, golden wave motifs elegantly complement the outer design, showcasing the artist’s refined craftsmanship.

The striking contrast between vermilion red and deep black makes these bowls perfect for celebratory occasions such as New Year’s gatherings, weddings, or tea ceremonies. They also bring a sense of grace and refinement to everyday dining.

Blending artistry with functionality, this set is a true expression of Japanese aesthetics.

Okada Hyōkan was a Kyōto artist following the tradition of Kimura Hyōsai, founder of the Hyō-school (Hyō-ha) – which is regarded as one of the main schools of Kyōto lacquer (the so called Kyōnuri).
