This delightful sake pourer is a fine example of Hirado ware, produced in the Mikawachi area of Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture. Shaped like Hotei, the Laughing Buddha, it brings a joyful charm to the sake table.
Hotei is one of the Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin) in Japanese folklore and is regarded as the god of happiness, abundance, and good fortune. He is often depicted with a large belly, a smiling face, and a cloth sack, symbolizing generosity and contentment. His cheerful appearance makes him a beloved figure across East Asia.
Hirado ware originated during the Azuchi-Momoyama period, when Lord Matsura Shigenobu of the Hirado domain invited Korean potters and established an official kiln in Yamauchimachi. The production was later moved to Mikawachi, where it continues to this day.
Please note: There is a kiln flaw on the foot and a small chip on the lid. Kindly refer to the photos for detailed condition.
