This is a hexagonal water pourer crafted in the style of Gennai-yaki, a type of ware named after the Edo-period polymath Hiraga Gennai. The piece features vibrant green and yellow glazes with embossed decorative panels on all six sides, showcasing a refined sense of design and ornamentation.
Gennai ware originated in Sanuki Province (present-day Kagawa Prefecture), where Hiraga Gennai invited potters from Nagasaki and guided ceramic production. Known for its vivid colors and exotic motifs, Gennai ware was often intended for export or presentation as gifts.
While functional as a water vessel, this piece is also prized as a decorative ceramic, embodying the artistic sensibilities of its era.
Please note: there are kiln flaws on the inner rim of the lid and on the spout, as well as kiln-related lines visible on the handle and body. Kindly refer to the photos for details of the condition.
