Women are the most common subjects of Ryohei Miwa's paintings, and maiko is one of the most representative of these subjects. He drew posters for “Miyako Odori,” an annual ceremony for maiko in Gion, Kyoto.

 

 

Ryohei MIWA

1929 - 2011

Born in Kyoto. Studied under Yamaguchi Kayo at his painting school Chencho-sha. He was repeatedly selected for the Nitten, and received the Special Prize and Hakusyu Prize at the 4th New Nitten in 1961, and the Kikka Prize at the 5th New Nitten the following year. He painted beautiful and graceful female beauty with nude women, Ohara women, and maiko as his subject matter. He also created posters for the “Miyako Odori” festival held in Gion, Kyoto.
