This is an example of what is known as "Old Baccarat," produced before World War II. The first pieces of this kind were specially commissioned by the owner of Harumi Shoten, a fine art dealer in Osaka during the Meiji period, directly from the Baccarat company in France.

 

These custom orders were made to suit the refined tastes of tea masters seeking elegant tea utensils for the warmer seasons. Items such as footed bowls for kaiseki cuisine and water jars (mizusashi) were designed and crafted based on detailed specifications, including colors and shapes—much like blueprints.
