This is a sublime sake cup (sakazuki) crafted by Miwa Kyūsetsu XI (later known as Jusetsu), a towering figure who reached the pinnacle of the modern Japanese ceramic world.

The piece showcases the iconic "Kyūsetsu White" (Kyūsetsu-jiro), a thick, snowy-white straw ash glaze developed alongside his elder brother, Kyūsetsu X. The glaze flows with a powerful yet warm expression, elevating this vessel beyond a simple functional item to a profound "objet d'art."

This cup embodies the unique "Kyūsetsu Style," characterized by a raw, vital earthiness. The texture reflects a master’s touch, blending deep-rooted tradition with a contemporary aesthetic that challenges the conventional boundaries of tea ceramics.

About the Artist: Miwa Kyūsetsu XI

1910 – 2012

Born in Hagi, Yamaguchi Prefecture. After apprenticing under his brother, he was deeply influenced by the spiritual teachings of Kawakita Handeishi. Following 30 years of refining his craft as a kiln hand, he established his original style in 1955. He is celebrated for revolutionizing Hagi ware with his bold "Oni-Hagi" (Demon Hagi) and "Wari-kodai" (Split Foot) techniques, leaving an indelible mark on the history of Japanese ceramics.
