This is a stunning set of 10 "Chosen Karatsu" Mukozuke (side dishes), crafted by Shigetoshi Nakazato, a preeminent figure in modern Karatsu ware.

The defining characteristic of the "Chosen Karatsu" style is the dramatic contrast between the deep, amber-black iron glaze and the opaque, milky-white straw ash glaze. Where the two glazes meet and melt together, they create a beautiful, hazy blue transition reminiscent of a flowing waterfall or mountain mist. The unique, stepped rectangular form adds a modern architectural elegance, making these pieces perfect for elevating both traditional Japanese Kaiseki and contemporary cuisine.

Shigetoshi NAKAZATO

1930 - 2015

Born in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, Shigetoshi was the third son of Muan Nakazato (the 12th Tarouemon Nakazato), a designated Living National Treasure. Growing up in a prestigious lineage of potters, he mastered traditional techniques while developing his own refined style. He is celebrated for his sophisticated wheel-work and his ability to modernize "Old Karatsu" aesthetics, solidifying his legacy as a leading master of the craft.
