【SOLD】Bernard Leach Frame: "A scarecrow"

Bernard Leach contributed to the development of the folk art movement with Muneyoshi Yanagi, Kenkichi Tomimoto, and Shoji Hamada. Later, he moved to England with Shoji Hamada and built a kiln in St. Ives. He visited Japan several times, producing and teaching in Mashiko, Kyoto, Fushina, Matsue, Onta, Yamashiro Onsen, and other places. The location depicted in this work is not certain, but it may be the place he visited when he came to Japan.

There is a guarantee by Shinsaku Hamada on the back of the frame.

 

Bernard Leach

1887-1979

He was born in Hong Kong. He grew up in Kyoto and Hikone. After moving to UK, He studied at art school. He returned to Japan in 1909 where he encountered the Shirakaba-ha school. He went back to UK accompanied by Shoji Hamada in 1920. He built a kiln there and began to make pottery, establishing Leach Pottery in 1922. He was a pioneer of British studio pottery.
