Shimaoka Tatsuzō(島岡達三)
1919 (Taishō 8) – 2007 (Heisei 19)
Born in Tokyo as the son of a traditional braided cord (kumihimo) maker. He studied under Hamada Shōji and, in 1953, established his own kiln in Mashiko. He developed a unique technique called Jōmon zōgan, which involves rolling braided cords over clay and applying white slip to create inlaid patterns.
He held solo exhibitions around the world and received widespread acclaim. In 1996, he was designated a Living National Treasure.
