When the firing of porcelain began in earnest at the end of the Edo period and was called "Kiyomizu-yaki," pottery fired in Kyoto before the mid-Edo period is said to have been called "KoKiyomizu". KoKiyomizu is also used as a generic term for Kyo-yaki colored pottery, which is different from porcelain, even in the latter part of the Edo period.
