This hanging scroll titled “Hana-ji Tsubo e” is a rare and refined work by Tomimoto Kenkichi (1886–1963), one of Japan’s most celebrated ceramic artists and a pioneer of modern mingei (folk craft) aesthetics.

In this piece, Tomimoto boldly overlays a powerful calligraphic rendering of the character 花 (“hana” – flower) atop an elegantly drawn ink painting of a jar. The brushwork of the jar conveys a sense of volume and serenity, reminiscent of his iconic ceramic forms. The calligraphy, in contrast, bursts with expressive energy, evoking the vitality and ephemeral beauty of blooming flowers.

A unique feature of this work is that the scroll ends (jikusaki) were also handcrafted by Tomimoto himself, showcasing his meticulous attention to detail and mastery in multiple disciplines. The overall composition harmonizes traditional form with modern dynamism, making it a striking addition to both classic and contemporary interiors.
