Mizoro-yaki / 御菩薩焼

Currently known as an early style of Kyo-yaki (Kyoto ware), Mizoro-yaki is one of the initial forms of Kiyomizu ware. Mizoro-yaki began in Kamigamo, following the traditions of Awata-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki, from the early Edo period.

 

According to historical records,Mizoro-yaki is a type of Kyo-yaki that was produced in Mizoro Village, Otagi District, Yamashiro Province. The village is described as being "approximately fifty chō north from Sanjo Ohashi Bridge in Kyoto," which corresponds to "the area around Mizorogaike Pond in Kamigamo, Kita Ward, Kyoto City" today.

 

The founder of Mizoro-yaki is said to be Man'emon, who established his residence near Mizorogaike Pond and constructed a kiln at Goen dani (Goen Valley), located at the foot of Keshiyama on the west side of the pond. However, there are various other theories as well.
